1.
Well, I thought that you’d been raptured When I came home early from the factory To find your favourite floral patterned Gown Just lying in the doorway It clashed with the colours of the flooring They’ve got you singing in the chorus Now Wondered what made me the sinner Never been a perfect Christian But ain't I prayed and been forgiven, Lord? And I've worked to make a living And provided for my children Wore the knuckles of my fingers Raw And I don't go in for drinking Or carry on with other women Haven't smoked since you got pregnant Babe So how could I be made a sinner? Left down here among the living The unwashed and the imprisoned The ones who did and said they didn't While you're in heaven with the risen Lord? I was snapped out of my dreaming As if someone dragged a needle Across the record that was reeling On Playing muffled through that speaker Where an unfamiliar t-shirt And an empty pairs of jeans were Thrown Wondering if you could be the sinner Left down here among the living All the unrepentant millions Who admit that they’ve committed Something they cannot be forgiven For And your camisole and leggings Made a path towards the bedroom So I followed like a breadcrumb Trail And on the wall there was a dead man Nailed above the creaking headboard And as I watched his limbs were spreading Out And he looked down on the bed there At the tangle of the flesh there Where your souls were intermeshing As if you been brought to heaven With your dress still on the kitchen Floor
2.
Oh babe what’s in a name? Should your word always sound the same? I remember the song that you sang and the chords that you rearranged Oh babe what’s in a name? Grew tired of the one that your parents gave They heard that you wanted to change it Like trumpets on judgment day Oh babe what’s in a name? I can’t say Oh babe what’s under the blanket? Sometimes I can’t read a face Guess they still don’t know how to behave When they can’t place you any which way Oh babe what’s in a name? When you say it it feels so strange I noticed your nails were unpainted Went home for the holidays Oh babe what’s in a name? I can’t say

In every liquor store And every station They’re selling tickets for the Transfiguration If they could see you now And at the golden hour And driving up and down The road We took the long way back Cut through your hometown Brought up some memories that You’ve had to hold down We tried to find your house But it’s a highway now And driving up and down The road If they could see you now And with your hair grown out And driving up and down And on and on And on and on
4.
Patience Paying off You pushed your luck For so long you finally won Famous For killing time And telling lies You made it sound so goddamn nice But I’m not implying I wouldn’t like it If someone decided To pay me some mind Nothing young Underneath that sun Won’t take it personal You weren’t the first one To ask Praying You’ll remember me When you finally reach The entrance to eternity I played in That old three-piece We opened for thee Oh way back in 2015 But I’m not implying You owe me some kindness Can’t get nothing by you So why would I try? Nothing young Underneath that sun Won’t take it personal You weren’t the first one To ask
5.
How can I live with myself Without pretending I’m anyone else? Anyone else would have left right away But I learned my parts and I took to the stage We signed that contract in blood We were impatient and we were in love In love with the lights and the road But some things still follow wherever you go They want us to sing them that song About our love long dead and gone And if they won’t hold their applause Baby the show must go on All night Confusing the present and past I place my hand on the small of your back I’m back in that house where we lived The ring and the finger and forming a fist They want us to sing them that song About our love long dead and gone And if they won’t hold their applause Baby the show must go on All night

Candle Out 01:23
Listening all crooked-mouthed Lingering till you flicker out Picturing your peeling house Bitter wind blew the candle out Candle out Listening Listening Listening
7.
The mention of mother The edge of her nothingness The spit in the trumpet The twist in your stomach And on the seventh day The lord reached down to take A bone you needed From your only summer home Out on Lake Michigan Feels lonely kissing him Your only missing rib You’re made for each other One way or the other You’re made For each other
8.
If you find the calm you’re searching for I hope your god is merciful I hope they draw you nearer still Until you’re close enough to kill We’re in your room, the light is on [We’re in your room, the light is on] And you’re the “you” in every song [And you’re the “you” in every song] It feels like cutting off the blood [It feels like cutting off the blood] You hold me down until we come [You hold me down until we come] I try to pull you nearer still Until you’re close enough to kill
9.
Losing 04:33
When you got back You went down to that track To watch the dogs You’d saved some cash For first and last But you were trashed and you were stoned Casually picked A random dog from the list Said “That’s the one” But at the sound of that gun Already knew in your gut You’d lost it all It really is amazing I don’t know how you do it Never much for playing but You’ve always had a way With losing When I got back I was surprised to cross paths With the one I love There was a time I used to call her mine But life, life is long And I got tired Of sharing my light So I took off Right away I knew I’d made a mistake But she was gone It really is amazing I don’t know how you do it Hardly even playing but You’ve always had a way With losing It really is amazing I don’t know how we do it Never much for playing but We’ve always had a way With losing

Pry 07:37
All calm and uncommon The love you shed So hardened my heart is Closed off to it I’ll pry it open What thunder uncovered Your island eyes? And who parted that darkness Like ocean tides? I’ll pry it open Down highways of violet That angel waits A garden unguarded Beyond the gate I’ll pry it open

about

forty days and nights in that bus ridin through the lights. book says to stop where the shoulder narrows on transfiguration highway. just dont dare look back for all the salt. and hanks here and tammys here and gram but no not emmy and no way is george gonna be here if tammys here but still the rest of em are all here and theyre singin and the singin is good. and when i hear it right away im picturin lindsay and her eyes blinkin and her eyes are islands sand and water and im pickin her up and carryin her around and puttin her down because it makes her happy-cry. but shes in toronto and im on the highway so for now im lookin out the window.

and i know i could hold a harmonica out that window and let the wind play it. learned that on this very bus once. but the wind only exhales so it neglects some notes and its all major and its all tonic all night.

like: I I I I I I I I I and on and on and on.

ive learned a song doesnt need many chords but all my favourites at least use more than one. so its still best to hear woman or man or any person play because unlike the wind most folks can inhale also.

more like: I V I V I V I V I

and on.

and as we drive ive been lookin for a house but it aint there. but im swearin it was once so i keep lookin. and the lights are passin and they are lookin like marmora sun so not quite normal. and i know if we went back the way we came we might have a second shot to see that house and if we kept going still wed see petrolia and then wed see the chemical lights and they also arent normal but in a different way than marmora sun or these lights too. but we cant turn around on account of the salt so whats the point comparing lights. just keep drivin forward through them and on until the shoulder starts to narrow.
