cassettes are hand-stamped by kenny and include a j-card designed by kenny and james lee chiahan, featuring kenny's mostly-legible cursive writing. note that the stamped tapes may have small cosmetic "flaws" due to the hand-made nature (matches the flawed recordings well, though!)

in february 2019, we played a short string of shows (i.e., a "micro-tour") in montreal and kingston, with the expectation that they would be our last with liam on drums - he moved out west shortly after (he has thankfully returned since). we were just finishing up our work on "transfiguration highway" and we were looking forward to playing some new songs for the first time at those shows.
i brought along four cassettes: two to record our nights in montreal, one for our night in kingston, and one we labeled "random shit" (we sadly lost the "random shit" tape somewhere on our short journey). my thinking was this: we would use my old brown fisher price cassette recorder to create a shit-fi live album to document the final days of this lineup.
as is my custom, i failed to get around to editing the recordings, and in the meantime megan and i played a duo set at a house show in toronto, so we decided to record that as well. in the fall of 2019, we played a couple of shows with a new drummer, ben fukuzawa, and, as is also my custom, i forgot to bring the recorder to one show and forgot to turn it on for the other one (thank you, ben, for your time in the band, and i'm sorry i failed to document it here!).
in november 2019, brodie (long time LK drummer who moved the UK in early 2018) was visiting for about a month and we had the opportunity to play a couple of shows as a sort of reunion of an earlier lineup. i managed to remember to bring the recorder (and turn it on) for those shows in montreal and toronto with our friends in common holly.
2020 began, i played a small solo show in chicago (documented elsewhere in much better fidelity), and then the pandemic presented itself and made live shows impossible for the foreseeable future. it felt like the right time to finish this project, as a document of a time when we took shows for granted. it brought up some complicated feelings to listen back. i miss playing music for people, and i especially miss spending time with my loved ones in the band.
a time will come when we can gather safely again, and i’m sure those first shows back will be among the most special. in the meantime, i'm happy to present this very imperfect document of some very imperfect shows we played in canada in the year of our lord 2019.
